MAGFOIL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Foil Printing?

The Foil Printing process involves a heated metal plate being applied like a stamp to a roll of coloured material called foil. This process results in an image being transferred from the foil on to the magnetic rubber. Foil printing best suits simple text, line art and basic logos. It is not suited to large block areas as moisture becomes trapped between the foil and rubber causing print defects. It also does not suit printing images of close registration, shades of colour or more than 3 spot colours. For designs of this nature Magfoil recommends clients consider our Full Colour Digitally Printed range of magnets.

Is White the only colour you can print on?

The most common colour is white however there is a limited range of pre-coloured rubber material available including red, blue, green, yellow and black. Magnets can be supplied either Butt cut (square corners) or Die cut to a shape.

Do Magfoil only Foil Print on magnetic material?

Foil printing is also used on self adhesive paper and vinyl for stickers.

What Colour Foils are available?

When people hear the term "foil printing" they often think of shiny metallic print. Foils come in a range of plain colours as well as metallic's and holographic's (reflective foils). Foil colours come in a range of pre-coloured rolls. Due to this we are unable to alter the colour so sometimes perfect PMS colour matching is not possible but we will always advise which is the closest match. When selecting colours please refer to your Magfoil colour chart for available colours.

What is a Digitally Printed Magnet?

Digital magnets are printed using the latest high quality digital print technology. The printed image has a coating of clear laminate giving a protective high gloss finish to the magnet. Digital magnets are suitable for images such as photographs or multi-coloured art and can be manufactured using 0.6mm or 0.4mm magnetic rubber material. Digital magnets can be supplied with square, rounded corners or die cut to most shapes.

What about Screen printed Magnets ?

For Large Magnets eg. Car Door magnets and exact PMS matching we may recommend screen printing. Screen printing uses colour fast inks - perfect for outdoor. Good for tight registration and large block or reverse areas of print. Screen printed magnets can be supplied with square, rounded corners or die cut to most shapes.

What is a Budget magnet?

Magfoil recently introduced the "Budget magnet" to the product range. Don't let the name mislead you - Budget magnets provide a cost effective option to our digital range without compromising quality. There are two main differences between our standard and budget range. Budget magnets are printed on 0.4mm rubber and they are butt cut (square cornered).Text and images on a budget magnet design should be kept at least 2mm from cut line.

Artwork requirements.

Foil and Screen printing requires the art to be in Vector Format - created in programs like Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw or Freehand. This is so colours/images may be separated for the creation of plates / screens. All Fonts should be converted to curves / outlines. Text cannot be edited once converted so if editing is required then a file containing the fonts will need to be supplied. We do our setup in Adobe Illustrator so an AI or EPS file is ideal. Files can be sent as an attachment to an email or on CD. Microsoft Word, Publisher and Power Point documents files are not suitable as art.

For Digital Magnets TIF or JPG images may be supplied but need to be at least 240 dots/pixels per inch (dpi) and at size of the finished product / magnet. If images in your design go to the edge of the magnet you will need to provide 2mm bleed past the cut line. Images on the Budget magnets should be kept at least 2mm from the cut line. On all our products Text should be kept at least 2mm from the cut line.

What is Bleed?

The bleed is a portion of the artwork that extends beyond the trim marks / cut line of the print. Bleed is required to account for any slight misalignment during cutting.
